"Tradition and modernity
This is instrumental singing that soars into brighter spheres - on an equal footing with its two partners in this trio. This opens all the doors of sensitivity to great narratives in a small space! Pianist Schaghajegh Nosrati drives the tides of this ocean of sound higher and keeps the waves alive, while percussionist Sebastian Flaig sets the heartbeat on his frame drum with muffled beats and sharp accents.
Enough of the metaphors, which are so associative on first hearing. The Joolaee trio combines tradition and modernity and is stylistically extremely diverse and variable with a poignant density of expression. Just as it should ideally be in jazz.
Beauty of sound that gets under your skin
On an audibly higher level, the three musicians come from different musical backgrounds: Misagh Joolaee is one of the most sought-after virtuosos on the kamancheh, the traditional violin-like string instrument from ancient Persia. Pianist Schaghajegh Nosrati has made a name for herself as a Bach interpreter, among other things. And percussionist Sebastian Flaig is stylistically at home between early music, oriental music and jazz - this horizon alone is enough to prevent falling into any folklore trap. [...]
Fascinating inventiveness
Ritualistic, almost meditative parts lead into heated, polymetric outbursts, at times condensed by unison techniques, which in turn are reminiscent of Azerbaijani mugham traditions that were made known in the western world decades ago by Aziza Mustafa Zadeh, for example. The inventiveness of all three band members in exploring and combining tonal and modal possibilities is always fascinating, with elements of Bach finding their way back in as a matter of course. Music, when left free in the best sense of the word, as here with the Joolaee Trio, knows only affinities and interfaces and no political or ideological barriers. All that remains now is the desire to experience this exceptional trio live."

Das ist instrumentaler Gesang, der sich in hellere Sphären erhebt – auf gleichberechtigter Höhe mit seinen beiden Partnern in diesem Trio. Das öffnen auf kleinem Raum großen Erzählungen alle Tore der Empfindsamkeit! Pianistin Schaghajegh Nosrati treibt die Fluten dieses Klangozeans höher und hält die Wellen lebendig, während Percussionspieler Sebastian Flaig auf seiner Rahmentrommel mit dumpfen Schlägen und scharfen Akzentuierungen den Herzschlag vorgibt.
Genug erstmal der Metaphorik, die sich schon beim ersten Hören so assoziativ aufdrängt. Das Joolaee-Trio verbindet Tradition und Moderne und agiert bei ergreifender Ausdrucksdichte stilistisch ausgesprochen divers und variabel. So wie es eben im Idealfall auch im Jazz stattfindet.
Klangschönheit, die unter die Haut geht
Auf hörbar höherer Ebene kommen bei den drei Musikern unterschiedliche musikalische Hintergründe zusammen: Misagh Joolaee zählt zu den gefragtesten Virtuosen auf der Kamancheh, dem traditionellen, geigenähnlichen Streichinstrument aus dem alten Persien. Pianistin Schaghajegh Nosrati machte sich unter anderem als Bach-Interpretin einen Namen. Und Perkussionist Sebastian Flaig ist stilistisch zwischen Alter Musik, orientalischer Musik und Jazz zu Hause – allein dieser Horizont bewahrt schon hinreichend davor, in irgendeine Folklorefalle zu tappen. Faszinierender Erfindungsreichtum
Rituelle, fast meditative Parts leiten in hitzige, polymetrische Ausbrüche über, phasenweise verdichtet von Unisono-Techniken, die wiederum an aserbaidschanische Mugham-Traditionen erinnern, die schon vor Jahrzehnten etwa von Aziza Mustafa Zadeh in der westlichen Welt bekannt gemacht wurden. Faszinierend ist immer aufs Neue die Erfindungskraft aller drei Bandmitglieder, tonale und modale Möglichkeiten zu erkunden und zu kombinieren, wobei auch schließlich wieder Elemente von Bach selbstverständlich Einzug finden. Musik, wenn man sie im besten Sinne frei-lässt, wie hier beim Joolaee-Trio, kennt nur Verwandtschaften und Schnittstellen und eben keine politischen oder ideologischen Barrieren. Jetzt bleibt nur noch der Wunsch, dieses Ausnahme-Trio auch live zu erleben."

The album’s title, ‘Morning Wind’, is taken from the seminal Divān of Hafez, a collection of Persian poems dating back to the 14th century. In the trio’s words, ‘It blows from the east and is not only said to carry the secrets of lovers but also to have a fertilising effect and bring spring.’ The morning wind also inspires the idea of ‘a musical spring’ or new beginning, which arises from the combination of different musical traditions.’ [...]
